AAGL Practice Guidelines Committee:
Breaking Barriers with Collaborative Work

AAGL recognizes the value of practice guidelines that address conditions pertinent to the field of Complex Gynecology and MIGS. In so doing, the in-house AAGL Practice Guidelines Committee was established in 2021. Since its inception, the committee has been working diligently alongside multiple teams throughout the world. The ultimate goal is to deliver high-quality documents that guide future research endeavors and provide guidelines for safe and effective patient care.

Practice guidelines development follows a rigorous process that takes time. Starting from a predetermined clinical question, the working group embarks on a comprehensive and systematic review of the literature, risk of bias assessment, and data abstraction. The team engages an expert statistician for analyses so that summary statements, with levels of strength of recommendations, may be generated. A separate expert panel is then consulted to vet and approve the draft of recommendations, prior to dissemination of the guidelines.

We are pleased to inform the AAGL community that the first document to provide guidance on the selection of patient-reported outcome measure tools in endometriosis research will be published in JMIG in January 2024. The in-house team members, Xiao Xu, PhD, Loren Hackett, and I, thank our colleagues from the US, Canada, and Australia for their dedication and countless hours to complete this work!

The AAGL Practice Guidelines are a culmination of collaborative work that highlights our commitment to advancing Complex Gynecology and MIGS care. Through the collective efforts of dedicated individuals, these projects embody the power of collaboration and synergy that arise when passionate individuals and talents come together. We also emphasize the importance of mentorship in these projects that foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing.

Look out for more practice guidelines to come out soon! We are keen to know what topics you want addressed and if you are interested in participating in this important work. Feel free to contact me directly:  Rosanne.kho@bannerhealth.com.
